Pastor Chris asked me to introduce myself. I was raised near Raleigh, North Carolina. I moved to Atlanta to attend law school in 1973 and never left. I joined Smoke Rise in 2007, after visiting for over a year. I am married to Malane – 39 years this June — and have two sons and two granddaughters. I am a member of the Faith and Issues Sunday School Class. This is my second term as a deacon. I am honored to serve as Chairman of the Deacon Fellowship in 2016. You will learn about the other officers and leaders in future editions of the Cross Tie
One of my first duties this year is to appoint deacons to fill the unexpired terms of Abby Sizemore and Fred Platѐ. Martha Abner and Graham Stovall have been nominated to special one-year terms; both of them have served as deacons before, so ordination is not necessary.
Martha Abner has been a member of Smoke Rise since 1991. She has been active with the youth, as a teacher in many capacities and has coordinated and chaperoned several youth trips. She has also been active in the ladies GAP mission trips to Appalachia. Martha is married to Brian; their two children were dedicated and baptized at Smoke Rise.
Graham Stovall has been a member of Smoke Rise since 1988. He has served on the Finance and Stewardship Committees and led the capital campaign to retire the church mortgage. He has made 12 trips to Honduras with Smoke Rise and is on the Board of Honduras Outreach. Graham is married to Penny; they are members of the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class.
The congregation will be asked to vote to approve Martha and Graham as deacons later this month.
