30 Tasty Years with Lou Tankersley

By Cathy Blanton

Lou TankersleyNo one familiar with Smoke Rise Baptist Church can long ignore the tantalizing aroma of fried chicken before deacon lunches. The delicious smells of bacon waft down the hallways and into the neighborhood prior to church wide breakfasts. Those yummy chicken pot pies? The crusts are mixed and rolled out by hand. Come into the fellowship hall and see the array of floral arrangements and the beautiful presentation of tasty foods. Smoke Rise is fortunate to claim Lou Tankersley as our Food Services Coordinator. That title doesn’t tell the whole story, though!

Lou has been part of the Smoke Rise kitchen staff for 30 years. She worked under Virginia Cannon for 11 years before taking over the reins. Though Lou learned much from her early years in the SRBC kitchen, she already had an innate propensity for food services, inherited from her mother, Horacetine Vann.

Lou prepares awesome banquets, beautiful wedding receptions, Advent breakfasts, weekly Wednesday night dinners and more but it’s her gracious hospitality that you feel when you see her decked out in her colorful aprons and see her mega watt smile!

Lou is a multi talented lady! Her job entails so much more than just food preparation! She’s a valued member of our church staff, always standing ready to offer the proper action for any and all occasions. Ever modest, Lou never hoards the accolades she receives but is always quick to say that her kitchen staff makes her look good. Smoke Rise is a church that worships, learns, cares, serves and gives. Lou Tankersley embodies every one of these attributes. Thanks for 30 great years, Lou!
